The West Nebraska Register is the official newspaper of the Diocese of Grand Island, published 24 times a year. The Register
reaches approximately 50,000 Catholics throughout the 42,000 square mile territory of the Diocese of Grand Island under
the direction of Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt. The West Nebraska Register was published in 1930 by the first
bishop for the diocese, Bishop James A. Duffy. The idea for a Catholic newspaper began in the 1920s when Father Matthew Smith,
a newspaper man from Pennsylvania moved to Denver. It was his intention to provide every home with a Catholic newspaper
—whether they could afford it or not.
The West Nebraska Register still carries out that mission today.
